The lagoon is huge, spanning 26 miles (the largest freshwater body of water in Mexico!), and offers tons of romantic activities. As a former silver mining town, today the pueblo magico of Taxco is a great historical option for the most romantic city in Mexico. And it’s not only the quaint town itself that makes it a great place for couples.

Other than wandering the scenic streets of Taxco, some of the most romantic things to do involve traveling just outside of the town. Couples will enjoy spending the day at the blue pools of Pozas Azules, surrounded by nature.

Adventurous couples will want to explore Grutas de Cacahuamilpa, one of the largest cave systems in the world. This adventure includes optional zipline and rappelling activities.

And for a romantic evening in Taxco, take your partner up the mountain via cable car to Hotel Montetaxco for a sunset cocktail or intimate dinner with panoramic views looking over the city.

Submitted by Shelley of Travel Mexico Solo.

Zihuatanejo, Mexico (zee-wah-ten-aye-ho) is one of the most romantic cities in Mexico, especially for beach-lovers. It’s a bohemian beach town, oozing with charm, laid back vibes and friendly locals. The main draw are the beaches, like Playa las Gatas, Playa la Ropa, Playa Contramar, Playa Madera, Playa Larga and Playa Principal.

Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, photo credit: Travel Mexico Solo

Some popular tours to take include a boat cruise to Isla Ixtapa or a snorkeling tour. History buffs will want to visit Zona Arqueológica Soledad de Maciel to see the ancient pyramids.

Zihuatanejo is located in Guerrero state, in south-central Mexico. It sits right on the Pacific Coast and is about 20-30 minutes from Ixtapa, one of the best resort towns in the country. The nearest airport is the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport (code: ZIH).

Zihuatanejo is definitely not a resort town like Ixtapa. However, being close to a major town means anything you need (ATM, hospital, bank, pharmacy) is nearby. While there's no Zihuatanejo Uber or ride-share service, you can take a taxi from ZIH Airport to the beach for about $12-15 USD (approx. $250 MXN pesos).

It’s easy to get around Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa on foot or by taxi, so you don’t need to rent a car. Either option is safe, as these beach towns are both considered safe for travelers.

Located in the Baja California Peninsula, Cabo San Lucas makes for a perfect romantic getaway whether you are looking to treat your partner or enjoy a great time with your family.

Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, photo credit: Explore Baja California

Whether you want to enjoy stunning Baja California beaches, dine at some of the best Cabo San Lucas restaurants or watch wildlife, there are so many reasons why it’s a great pick for the most romantic city in Mexico.

Cabo is well known for its high-end resorts and luxury stays with golf courses, but there’s so many more romantic things to do in Cabo than just staying in an all-inclusive accommodation.

It's a great year-round destination that boasts plenty of activities from exploring the beaches to snorkeling, diving and hiking.

Baja California is known for its migrating whales: From December through early April, you can spot gray whales, humpbacks, blue whales, and whale sharks, all around the peninsula. Whale watching tours depart daily from Cabo San Lucas, however, seeing a whale in the wild is never a guarantee, as these marine giants are notoriously elusive.

Or, you can simply rent a car in Cabo San Lucas to explore the best of Baja California and visit places like La Paz, Todos Santos and Loreto. We're certain you'll see why we think Cabo San Lucas is a great choice for the most romantic city in Mexico.

Veracruz, Veracruz, photo credit: Growing Global Citizens

You can enjoy each other's company and the sun and sand at some of the resorts on the south side of the city.  The real romantic gem, though, is the square in the city center. Officially called Plaza de la Constitución but referred to locally as Los Portales, this Spanish colonial-style square has a beautiful cathedral and arches surrounding a park.  The outdoor restaurants and bars lining the square make a great date night.

Additionally, there is usually entertainment in the form of musicians who will come and play the marimba near your table.  On certain days of the week there are free performances of colorful folkloric dance.

End your romantic evening by sharing some of Veracruz’s famous ice cream from Güero, Güera! and walking along the boardwalk. Decide for yourself if Veracruz is worth a visit and worthy of consideration of the most romantic city in Mexico.
